Daylight Saving Starts 4 October: What Queensland Businesses Should Check in Their Booking and Calendar Systems

Daylight saving starts Sunday 4 October 2026, but not in Queensland. Brisbane falls an hour behind Sydney. Here’s what to check in your bookings, calendars, SMS reminders and integrations.
Daylight saving: a checklist for QLD businesses

Daylight saving starts at 2am on Sunday 4 October 2026 in New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, South Australia and Tasmania. Queensland does not change its clocks. From Sunday, Brisbane will be an hour behind Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart, and half an hour behind Adelaide, until daylight saving ends on the first Sunday in April 2027.

For Queensland businesses with interstate clients, staff or servers, that one hour causes the same problems every year: bookings at the wrong time, reminder texts that arrive an hour early, and meeting invites that do not line up. Most of these problems come from software settings, not people. Here is what to check this week.

Time zones from Sunday 4 October

1. Use a named time zone, never a fixed offset

The most common cause of errors is software set to a fixed offset such as “UTC+10” or “GMT+10” instead of a named time zone. A fixed offset never adjusts for daylight saving. Check your settings in:

  • Your website platform. In WordPress, go to Settings, then General, and choose “Brisbane” rather than a UTC offset.
  • Booking and scheduling tools.
  • Your practice management or job management system.
  • Email marketing and SMS platforms.
  • Servers, databases and scheduled jobs on AWS, Azure or your hosting provider.

Queensland businesses should use Australia/Brisbane. A business in Sydney should use Australia/Sydney, which switches automatically.

2. Online bookings for interstate customers

  • Make sure your booking page shows which time zone appointments are in, for example “All times are Brisbane time (AEST)”.
  • If you serve interstate customers online, consider showing times in the customer’s local time zone.
  • For clinics, check how telehealth appointments appear to interstate patients. Halaxy users can also review our guide to Halaxy Xero integration while you are checking settings.

Worried your bookings or reminders will drift an hour?

We will check the time zone settings across your website, booking system, SMS reminders and integrations before Sunday.

3. Calendar sync

If staff sync a work calendar with Google, Outlook or iCloud, each device and calendar uses its own time zone setting. A practitioner whose phone is set to Sydney while the practice system is set to Brisbane will see appointments an hour apart. Ask staff to confirm their calendar time zone, especially anyone who works across state lines.

4. SMS and email reminders

Reminder systems often schedule messages relative to a server clock. If that clock uses a fixed offset or the wrong city, reminders will arrive an hour early or late from Sunday. Send yourself a test reminder for an appointment next week and check the time in the message. If you use Twilio or another SMS API, see our overview of messaging APIs.

5. Interstate staff, rosters and meetings

  • Recurring meetings created in a southern state’s time zone will move by an hour in Brisbane calendars. Check next week’s standing meetings.
  • Rosters and shift systems should state which time zone shifts are in.
  • Support hours on your website should say “Brisbane time” if you serve other states.

6. Integrations and automated jobs

Nightly syncs, invoice runs and report emails scheduled for “just after midnight” can run twice or be skipped when clocks change in the systems they depend on. Integrations between a Queensland system and an interstate or cloud service should store times in UTC and convert only for display. If yours do not, now is the time to check. Our Halaxy integration work follows this approach.
